What is CPC?

The Driver CPC (which stands for Driver Certificate of Professional Competence) is a qualification required by anyone wanting to drive an HGV, Bus or coach, professionally.

You must have Driver CPC if you drive an HGV, LGV, coach or bus for a living. You must maintain your CPC by taking 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years. If your Driver CPC card has expired, you will need to attend 5 days / 35 hours of training before your new card is issued.

In November 2024, the government announced changes to Driver CPC requirements, which are now in effect.

There are now two kinds of Driver CPC:

The National DCPC and the International DCPC

The International DCPC is the same as the Driver CPC that everyone has completed until now and is valid for all professional drivers.

The new option is the National Driver CPC, which brings the following changes – but it’s not valid for those who drive professionally outside the UK:

3.5 hour modules: Drivers can complete their required 35 hours of training in smaller 3.5-hour sessions, instead of the previous minimum of 7-hour blocks. The total still needs to add up to 35 hours.

The new fast-track Return to Work option is now available for those whose Driver CPC (driver qualification card or DQC) has expired. This will take effect from 1 February 2025.

This option allows you to return to driving in the UK after a 07h00 DCPC course. You must then complete the remaining 28 hours of DCPC within 12 months to keep the validity of your DCPC. Only once completing the 28 hours (full 35 hours) may you then drive in the EU professionally
